On This Program you will...
Support two different types of service projects during your time on-program: engage with the topic of social justice as you work with nearby refugee communities and tackle the environmental challenges facing lakes and the woodlands of northern New England. Whether you’re out on a hike through Maine’s abundant forests, kayaking in one of the state’s many waterways, or discovering the quaint and traditional towns of this majestic, rural New England locale, you’re sure to find exploration and fun around every corner.
Program Type:
Social Justice OR Environmental Stewardship
Your Adventure is Just Around the Corner!
Community Service
Many towns in Maine have embraced resettled refugees, particularly youth from Syria, Iraq, and parts of Africa. Learn about the challenges they face, and help pivot to practical solutions. You may participate in community advocacy or physical service project to support the cause. Additionally, Maine’s wilderness is under threat from climate change and environmental pressures. Help by working on habitat preservation and restoration projects. This may include supporting the Lake Association or Forest Service.

Immersive Learning
Maine is uniquely a refugee state and an outdoor wonderland; learn how both its residents and its native wildlife populations coexist and the challenges each faces in an ever-changing global landscape. This program is ideal for teens seeking intensive leadership development. You will be tasked with learning not only about the difficulties facing long- time residents as well as recent refugees, but also how everything from a changing climate to urbanization is changing the once-pristine local environment. Meet with local leaders and learn firsthand from guest speakers along the way.
Adventure
Popular with locals as well as tourists for its incredible state parks and wild treks, you will get to know the outdoors of the Maine wilderness well during your time here. Lace up your hiking boots and trek under the wooded canopies of some of the state’s many nature trails. Then, hop in a kayak and enjoy the beautiful freshwater lakes Maine is known for. You’ll also have a chance to visit a historic lighthouse as well as visit Acadia National Park. On the 21-Day Program, explore the coast by taking a sailboat in the bay. See the famous coastline, try to spot whales and learn about the local wildlife and environment.
