GETTING STARTED

Your roadmap to applying for and completing a GLA Fellowship

Not sure where to begin? We have you covered!

1. Getting Started

Begin by choosing your Fellowship: Arts & Letters or Honors.

Then, choose a concentration based on which Fellowship you chose.

Honors Fellowship applicants can choose from one of four concentrations:

  • Animal & Wildlife Conservation
  • Community Development
  • Environmental Stewardship
  • Medicine & Public Health

While Arts & Letters Fellowship applicants have three concentrations to choose from:

  • Creative Writing
  • Photography
  • Videography

The concentration you choose will provide context for your learning and have a direct correlation to your final essay (Honors Fellows) or creative project (Arts & Letters Fellows).

2. Applying for a Fellowship

Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply here for priority consideration! However, you have until our May 1st Fellowship application deadline to apply.

You must be enrolled in GLA summer program or travel internship to participate in a Fellowship. However, you are welcome to apply to be an Arts & Letters or Honors Fellow first to see if you’re accepted. If you are, you will need to enroll in a program or internship after to start your Fellowship journey.

Here’s what to expect during your application process:

  • Applying only takes 5-10 minutes
  • Provide your basic contact information
  • Complete a short answer questionnaire
  • We’ll notify you of your application status shortly thereafter

You can complete your online application here.

3. Being Accepted

Your Arts & Letters or Honors Fellowship application will be reviewed by our team within 1-2 weeks, but usually sooner!

Once you are accepted, you will receive your Fellowship curriculum packet, which includes step-by-step instructions for everything you need to do for your pre-program, on-program and post-program requirements as a Fellow.

We’ll assume that you wish to participate as a Fellow upon acceptance; however, please let us know right away if you decide to decline your Fellowship.

4. Paying Your Fellowship Fee

You will need to pay your $500 Fellowship Fee upon acceptance to participate in the Fellowship.

This will automatically be added to your account with Global Leadership Adventures and can be paid using our online enrollment portal or by calling our Admissions Team during office hours at 858-771-0645.

Once you have paid the fee, please note that it is nonrefundable, even if you decide later not to complete your Fellowship requirements.

5. Completing Pre-Program Tasks

Once you receive your Fellowship packet by email,  review the detailed curriculum right away to find out exactly what you need to do to successfully start your Fellowship.

Complete your optional pre-program assignments as they will be extremely helpful in providing context to your upcoming on-program and post-program requirements. This is a great way to learn more about your field of interest, too!

We’ll also be hosting a webinar for GLA Fellows in May to provide guidance for the remainder of your Fellowship requirements. We’ll send you more details on the exact day/time of the webinar soon.

6. Completing On-Program Tasks

By design, your Fellowship requires little of you during your program experience. Really, the time dedicated to your Fellowship on-program is really to provide you with the knowledge and resources to help you as you write your final essay or curate your final creative project post-program.

Once on program, you should:

  • Take notes, ask questions or journal
  • Build context for your final project
  • Gather photos, videos or quotes for your final project (if needed)

Don’t forget to have fun on-program! It’s most important that you experience the full program as intended, and not be too consumed by your upcoming final project to miss enjoying your once-in-a-lifetime travel program.

Also, be sure to introduce yourself to your Program Director at the start of the program as an Arts & Letters Fellow or Honors Fellow. While there will be no separate activities planned for Fellows on-program, it could be helpful for staff to know your Fellowship status in case you are putting together any materials for your upcoming final project.

7. Completing and Submitting Your Post-Program Final Project

Once you return home from your program, this is when the Fellowship really hits its stride.

Choose a prompt for your final essay or creative project based on what’s included inside your Fellowship curriculum packet.

You will need to complete your final essay or creative project by or before the submission deadline of September 15, 2024.

Submit your project for committee review by the deadline, and then our Fellowship Committee will review your final project in full detail.

They’ll send you a completed rubric after scoring your project, and let you know if you’ve successfully completed the requirements to be a Fellow in good standing.

8. Receiving Awards and Merits

Once the Fellowship Committee has determined you successfully completed a final project that meets all Fellowship requirements, you will receive the following awards and merits:

  • A Certificate of Achievement
  • A Custom Metal Fellowship Pin
  • A Recommendation Letter from our Executive Director (upon request)
  • The title of Honors Fellow or Arts & Letters Fellow for your College Applications

The Fellowship Committee will complete all final project reviews by no later than January 15, 2024, and you can expect to receive the aforementioned awards/merits soon thereafter.

However, if you need to have an early review of your project completed in-time for pending college applications, please let us know in advance and we should be able to accommodate your request for an early review of your project as long as you give us enough notice ahead of time.
