SOUTH AFRICA

SAFARI & CONSERVATION EXPEDITION

Explore the front lines of wildlife conservation as you learn to track, monitor and protect South Africa’s most majestic animals.

Program Overview

On this program, you’ll experience life in a quintessential South African reserve and learn about conservation on the front lines. You might spot Africa’s “Big Five” in the region: lions, leopards, elephants, Cape buffalo and rhino. By night, you’ll live at a rustic home base on the reserve, listening to traditional stories and learning about tribal culture. By day, shadow wildlife conservationists in the South African bush, go on game drives to observe animals and learn about sustainably preserving the region’s endangered species. Your animal conservation efforts will be hands-on and incredibly immersive. You’ll support the reserve with ongoing animal identification and maintenance projects and assist an anti-poaching unit with wildlife predator monitoring.

On GLA’s South Africa: Safari & Conservation™ program you will:

  • Assist rangers with ongoing rhino, big cat and African elephant conservation projects
  • Track and monitor wildlife movement on a renowned reserve
  • Spot Africa’s “Big Five” wild animals
  • Enjoy a bonfire under the stars

Sample Itinerary

Let’s take a sneak peek at what your program experience might look like this summer! Please note that the order of activities may differ for each program session. The details provided here represent a general outline of what you can anticipate, though community service projects and activities are subject to change based on the needs of our local community partners, cultural celebrations and traditions, weather conditions and the specific requirements of the student group.

Day 1: Arrival

Touch down in Johannesburg, the heart of South Africa! GLA staff will greet you at the airport, and we’ll head to a local hotel for an overnight stay. Rest up, as we’ll embark on an exciting road trip to our Home Base in the African bush the next morning!

Day 2: Sunset in the Reserve

Once everyone arrives, we’ll drive to Nambiti Game Reserve (about 4-5 hours). Use this time to connect with your fellow travelers during the road trip. After lunch, we’ll hike down to our Home Base, set on peaceful grounds along a biodiversity corridor where migratory animals travel. Settle in and enjoy the serene surroundings!

Days 3-4: Service Work Begins

At Nambiti, we’ll learn about reserve life, research projects, and animal tracking using telemetry to support conservation efforts. After dinner, a night drive will reveal nocturnal wildlife, and we’ll assist with monitoring these species.

During the day, we’ll go on bush walks, study the region’s ecology, and enjoy nature. The day ends with an open-fire cooking competition. On Day 4, we’ll help conservationists with mist netting and bird ringing, collecting data on bird size, weight, and health.

Day 5: Transfer to Howick & Zipline

Today, we’ll head east to the Karkloof Forest Reserve for an exhilarating zipline adventure! Soar above the stunning landscape, gliding through the treetops while enjoying breathtaking views of ancient rock formations and wildlife. Whether you’re an experienced adventurer or a first-timer, this thrilling experience will leave you wanting more!

Day 6: Transfer to Bonamanzi Game Reserve & Service Continues

At Bonamanzi, we’ll dive straight into service work, rotating through three groups:

  • Group 1: Rhino monitoring, tracking black and white rhinos with reserve monitors.
  • Group 2: Anti-poaching unit, participating in snare removal.
  • Group 3: Reserve management support, including camera trap monitoring.

Monitoring endangered species, like rhinos, is crucial to their protection. You’ll learn how to use telemetry, identify animals by their ear notches, and capture data to support reserve managers and the anti-poaching unit.

Days 7-9: Anti-Poaching Unit Rotation

You’ll support the Anti-Poaching Unit by checking fences and collecting wire snares with armed rangers. We’ll also assist with reserve management tasks like road repairs and addressing plant invasions. You’ll work with camera traps to monitor elusive animals like leopards and hyenas, helping with wildlife research. Learn about the challenges facing Black Rhinos, including poaching and habitat loss. While spotting rhinos is rare, you’ll see plenty of other wildlife like wild dogs, giraffes, and kudu.

Days 10-11: Snake Pharm Project

Over the next few days, we’ll explore the world of Anti-Venom and the challenges veterinarians face in Africa. Learn about the Snake Pharm Project’s groundbreaking use of biomimicry to speed up anti-venom production. Students will hear from experts and assist in the research lab with tasks like general admin, digging plants, and maintaining enclosures for snakes, water monitors, and crocodiles.

Day 12: Local Community Service, Traditional Stories & Local Crafts

Today, immerse yourself in local culture by visiting a nearby village. You’ll participate in community projects supported by Project Rhino & Move Africa, NGOs we’ve collaborated with for years. Spend time with local families, enjoy tea with the community Gogo (grandmother), and create traditional crafts like beadwork, basketry, and pottery. In the afternoon, embark on a Big Five Bush Walk, where you’ll hike through the reserve, learning about the wildlife, their tracks, and smaller animals, guided by experienced experts.

Day 13: Wildlife Spotting & Wrapping Up Service

Rise early for an unforgettable adventure through the misty game reserve. During snare patrols, we may spot rhinos, elephants, and lions if we’re quiet and lucky. Review the camera trap footage you’ve collected and report back on your findings. Take a moment to reflect on the majesty of these wild animals and consider how we can ensure their protection for generations to come.

Day 14: Departure

Time to say Hamba Kahle—”goodbye” in Zulu—to South Africa! We’ll depart for the Durban airport together, and GLA staff will make sure that everyone is checked in for their flight and ready to embark on their journey home.

Community Service

Join professional conservationists in the field to assist with habitat restoration and wildlife monitoring. Help the conservation team eradicate invasive plant species, learn about anti-poaching efforts, join a snare patrol to identify leopards and hear from passionate wildlife protectors about their experiences combating poachers. You’ll track wildlife movements by satellite, see how rangers set camera traps and join them in reviewing video footage. Finally, engaging the local community is key to conservation: support programs that involve the community in protecting this region’s wildlife.

Hands-on Learning

Your time in South Africa will be rich with hands-on learning as you collaborate with your peers, conservationists and local leaders to preserve natural habitat and protect native animal populations. Hear from experts in the field about the challenges in preserving species such as elephants, giraffes, rhinos and large predators in the region. Learn to track fresh prints, identify wildlife tracks, discuss endangered species and more. Discover the biodiversity of the bush ecosystem and learn how nature and wildlife reserves play an incomparable role in the conservation of threatened and endangered species.

Adventure

No GLA program is complete without adventure! Finding the animals you’ll be tracking is an adventure every day in itself. However, there is more fun to be had away from Home Base as well! Discover all the wonders of South Africa and life in the bush. Go on a safari to spot the Big Five, hike the lush landscapes of KZN and explore local community life.

Lodging & Meals

Located in a well-known game reserve, students will hear the surrounding nature as they fall asleep. Accommodations are basic but clean and safe. Students sleep in gender-segregated rooms with roommates and have access to shared bathrooms with showers.

Staples of South African food include rice and potatoes, stew with vegetables and chicken or beef served with pap, similar to cornmeal. Braai is a traditional barbecue that is a must-try for every visitor to South Africa. As Game Reserves are remote in nature, special diets need to be arranged well in advance.

“My experience with GLA was truly unique and changed my worldview. Having traveled internationally before, I did not expect my trip to South Africa to have such an impact on me. There was something different about volunteering in the bush working with conservationists and locals that helped me develop as a young adult. The activities and volunteer work were fun and engaging and I learned a lot. I believe that this trip changed me for the better.”
