SERVICE EXPEDITION IN THE SACRED VALLEY

Community Service

Poverty in Peru is deepest among its indigenous population living in remote, rural areas. On this program, you’ll help improve the quality of life for local Peruvian community members by working on an infrastructure project. Students will be working alongside a local community leader as well as community members to support the construction of a communal center that will host organized weavers and community activities. You will contribute to the wellbeing of rural communities as you see up-close how projects like these can deliver meaningful – and sustainable – change.

Hands-on Learning

Outside of service, learn firsthand about Peru’s rich culture that descends from the Incan empire. Visit a local weaving cooperative, where beautiful handwoven textiles are produced. Learn to cook traditional dishes and some new dance moves to various genres of Peruvian music. Meet a local healer and take part in a traditional Andean ceremony. Engage in discussions with nonprofit organizations and local leaders to deepen your understanding of Peru’s contemporary culture. Stay for 21 days, learn firsthand from artisans how to make ceramics from volcanic ash, and spend one night in a traditional artisanal village with a Quechua host!

Adventure

The Sacred Valley surrounding Cuzco is full of incredible topography and archaeological marvels. You’ll tour famous ruins, and hike to the spectacular site of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The two-day trek passes through awe-inspiring valleys, and you’ll wake up from camp to staggering snow-capped peaks You’ll also experience an epic whitewater rafting adventure through a scenic river valley. Stay for 21 days and hike to the colorful Rainbow Mountain!
