WHO WE ARE:
Global Leadership Adventures (GLA) goal is to provide life-changing experiences that will cultivate a global perspective and open-mindedness in teens that will ultimately inspire them to become great leaders and global thinkers and seek positive change in their own communities. Our programs are 1-3 weeks long and offered in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas to teenagers aged 12-18 years old.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
We are looking for sales & customer service superstars to join our globally-based remote team representing GLA. You would join our team of experts in customer service and consultative sales who can speak with a level of confidence that inspires trust in our organization. We take pride in the people we select through our recruitment process to join our team as we know that YOU will be representing our organization and speaking to thousands of our families this year. You will often be the main point of contact with these young people and their parents, and are in many ways a gateway to these life-changing programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Generate sales by engaging in consultative sales over the phone (also email & text) with families who have expressed interest in our programs. Average 75-100 calls per day.
- You will communicate the excitement and transformative nature of our experiences as well as alleviate the nervousness that accompanies independent travel.
- Speak and correspond with hundreds of families per week regarding their questions, concerns, and making sure the student is ready to depart for their program.
- Calling warm leads, following up via phone from prior conversations, answering inbound calls and emailing & texting.
Staff our 24/7 hotline for on-call for shifts during the summer while programs are operating.
The bulk of our programs are in operation in the months of June through early August, however we have a few spring break programs in March/April as well. Your role will change based on seasonality:
Fall/Winter 2023: Onboarding & Training
Get settled and begin your role. We will provide several weeks of training and onboarding for you to familiarize yourself with our programs & systems. With summer programming months away, you will begin to gradually assist with sales inquiries (via phone, email, text) and also support families already enrolled in programs to prepare for traveling. Scheduled work hours will be about 30-40hrs per week during US Pacific Time business hours (approx. between 8am and 5pm Pacific time in the US.)
January-May 2024: Consultative Sales & Customer Service
We will be very busy with calls, emails and texts from families both looking to join a program and those who are already signed up. You’ll heavily support them with guidance to prepare them for success on the program. You will have sales enrollment quotas, customer service targets and benchmarks to meet. Shifts will be 5 consecutive days per week and may include Saturday shifts or additional hours as needed. Scheduled work hours will be during US Pacific Time business hours (approx sometime between 7am and 7pm Pacific time in the US.)
June, July, early August 2024: Continued Customer Service & 24/7 On-Call
Summer programs will be in operation around the world. You’ll still support families who are still preparing for travels and also serve on our 24/7 On-Call support team. Your role on the 24/7 support team consists of shifts managing communications (calls, emails/messages) with families and staff. This role can be very challenging and demanding at times and requires a keen sense of customer service, navigating systems and troubleshooting travel issues with patience. It can be very rewarding as you see challenges through – supporting everything from flight delays to relaying medical updates and everything in between. A team will be behind you to support high level issues, but you will take the lead on troubleshooting and triaging communication.
Most shifts are 12 hour shifts during the day (typically 8am to 8pm Pacific Time US). There may be some shifts at night (8pm to 8am Pacific Time US). On-Call shifts will always be followed by at least 12 hours off the following day/night. There will also be shifts to support during business hours if not serving an On-Call shift. Shifts will be 4-5 days per week for 36-48 hours per week (might not be consecutive days) and may be on any day of the week (Monday-Sunday). Time off requests during this timeframe will be blacked-out or very limited.
Late August-December 2024
Once programs wrap up each summer most of the team will prioritize their time off and book personal travels. We also aim to have our annual 1-4 day company retreat/FAM trip at the end of September (Location TBD, but past destinations included Peru, Cuba, Hawaii, San Diego, Guatemala and Mexico). Hours will be limited during this time frame (especially Aug/Sept).

*The Copywriter will work with all divisions at Terra Education Travel, as the Terra Marketing Team services all business segments
We are a certified B-Corporation that seeks to use the power of business for social good.
We are also a crew of do-gooders who are inspired by our work. Many of our team members have been here for years and years because we invest in a friendly, fun and transparent company culture.
Our company is headquartered in San Diego, California; however, this position is eligible for full-time remote work. You may occasionally be required to travel to San Diego for work-related meetings/events.
About The Role
The Terra Education Travel marketing team has an opening for a brand new position – Copywriter. This is a junior-level role that requires strong writing talent and a keen sense for creating content that matches a brand’s identity.
This position’s primary focus is to write compelling and concise copy for catalogs, emails, itineraries, websites, ads, newsletters and any number of other public-facing marketing assets. The content you create will inform and inspire our audience of new prospects and alumni alike, as well as convince them to enroll in one of our programs or trips.
The Copywriter must have the ability to easily switch between different “voices” and writing styles. The candidate who fills this role will be writing content for multiple divisions at our organization, across five different brands. Additionally, different audiences must have content curated for them, such as teens, their parents and returning travelers. This voice-switching capacity is critical to success in this role.
We also expect our Copywriter will have strong editing skills in order to make sure all of our copy is appropriately proofed before posting or publication.
Furthermore, we are an “all hands on-deck” Marketing Team, which requires everyone on the team to wear many different hats as part of their role. So while this position will focus primarily on copywriting, other tasks will be assigned on a rolling basis. The right candidate will be comfortable switching from writing to supporting other marketing needs or tasks as needed.
Intermediate skills in other marketing or marketing-adjacent areas, such as SEO or online reputation management, are preferred.
The candidate must also be able to hit deadlines regularly and succeed with minimal supervision. We’re proud not to micromanage our team members but that also means being self-sufficient in hitting goals and deadlines is important. The person filling this position will always have the support of their manager and fellow team members, but must be a self-starter.
The Copywriter will work closely not only with members of the Marketing Team, but with other key stakeholders across various divisions here at Terra Education Travel, to support content development needs and more.
The right candidate should express a willingness to learn new skills and platforms, and show an ability to be proactive and learn on-the-go when encountering an unfamiliar task.
Skills & Experience
Required Skills and Experience
The following items are required for success in this role.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- 2+ years of experience in copywriting with progressively growing responsibilities or equivalent experience (we will consider prospective copywriters with less experience if they have a strong writing portfolio relevant to this role)
- Ability to write copy for direct response channels, including blogs, catalogs, landing pages, emails, ads, brochures, etc.
- Capacity to write in different styles and voices for a varying spectrum of audiences
- Ability to write high volumes of content in a short period of time
- Strong copy editing skills and online research capabilities are also a must!
- Team-minded but comfortable working independently, with an entrepreneurial spirit and creative personality, at ease working and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced and challenging, but fun environment
- Creative mind with ability to consider technical marketing needs (for example, implementing SEO principles to fortify our website content for search results)
- A digital marketing native, who understands the latest trends and opportunities in order to speak authentically to a primary audience of high school students and their parents (an audience that is ever-changing)
- Impeccable customer focus and professionalism
- Highly motivated with high energy and strong time management skills
- An ability to adapt to seasonal workload and work portfolio changes (our company’s programs, which we market and sell, primarily run during the summer, so what you are working on in the fall, winter, spring and summer will all look quite different depending on the time of the year)
- A sense of humor and a true team player
Desired Skills and Experience
The following items may improve your candidacy for this position, but are not required.
- Experience writing in the travel industry or in educational fields
- Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) and the ability to make routine website content, format and photo updates after being shown the ropes during your onboarding period (we use WordPress, so if you know this, it’s a big plus)
- Experience with SEO principles to make sure our web properties are optimized for organic search; experience with SEO best practices, including the latest trends and tools, is desired by not required
- Experience with project management and/or working directly with a PPC consultant or web developer
- Basic to intermediate experience using Salesforce and Pardot or similar platforms is a plus
- Basic HTML for certain website/email template updates (if you don’t know this, we can teach you the basics… this isn’t a coding position whatsoever, but basic HTML can be a huge help)
Final Thoughts
We’re looking for someone who is ready to hit the ground writing on Day One! Write us an exceptional cover letter and let us know your strengths and your growth areas, as how your past experience and current skills can translate to success at equivalent tasks within this position’s portfolio (even if you don’t have particular experience in one area or another as outlined above).
Compensation, Benefits and Expectations
Compensation is competitive and is based on experience.
As a full-time member of the marketing team, you will be expected to work a minimum of 40 hours a week, though that may increase during peak times of the year up to 45-50 hours.
Office hours for this role are standard daytime hours Monday-Friday, and we offer flexible start times based on your location and preferred working hours, within reason. We do have to make sure there is some significant overlap with the rest of the team for meetings and collaborative project work, but we are as flexible as we can be.
We are now a fully remote company. No matter where you are based, you can work from home. However, you must have a strong internet connection wherever you are working, and be able to hop onto Zoom meetings when needed. If you are in the San Diego area, you can work at our small HQ office in Mission Valley from time to time as well.
We also offer five weeks of paid time off annually!
You may be eligible for company-sponsored travel to visit one or more of our programs/trips on a case-by-case basis, pending personal and company performance. We also offer medical, dental, vision and life insurance as well as a 401K, a wellness program, and a fun work environment within a mission driven, rapidly growing company you can believe in.
If you believe in our mission and want to contribute to the team and grow your talents with us, we’d love to hear from you.
