BEACHSIDE SERVICE ADVENTURE

Program Overview

Escape to Costa Rica’s beautiful Pacific coast, where you’ll volunteer on a service project that is most needed at the time of your arrival. This could be a mix of efforts, such as beach clean-ups to make way for nesting sea turtles, community or ecosystem restoration projects, or other initiatives that support your host community. While it has many achievements to boast of, such as universal healthcare, many Costa Rican communities – individuals, families and children alike – still benefit from your support! Community-led service projects can be a big help to citizens in rural areas. Relax after a hard day’s work at our beautiful Home Base. You’ll also have the chance to enjoy a variety of adventure activities, such as thrilling river tubing and ziplining expeditions, as well as a catamaran and snorkeling tour to experience fun in the sun with all the new friends you meet on-program.

Community Service

One of the most unique and wonderful aspects of participating in a Global Leadership Adventures program is that our volunteer efforts are really community-led service projects. There are many opportunities to serve the community here, and that means you’ll be working on a meaningful project based on what is identified as most needed within the community at the time of your arrival. For example, you may assist in environmental projects such as beach cleanups, planting native tree saplings, or creating signs to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. You may also work on initiatives within local schools, such as improving classroom infrastructure, or starting a school or community garden. The best part is that you’ll be living and working together in a small beachside community alongside welcoming locals, all where the ocean plays a huge role in daily life.

Immersive Learning

Living in an authentic community is a great way to learn about Costa Rican culture. Connect with local residents, learn to dance salsa and merengue; try your hand at cooking traditional dishes and indulge in fresh fruits grown locally. You and your fellow travelers will discuss current social issues in Costa Rica, including growing environmental concerns and the importance of ecotourism. You’ll also have opportunities to practice your Spanish around town if you’d like! Costa Rica is also famous for its well-preserved biodiversity, and you’ll witness an array of wildlife you won’t find anywhere else on Earth.

Adventure

Costa Rica is an adventurer’s dream! You and your new friends will cruise along the Guanacaste coast on a catamaran and witness stunning natural habitats along the way. Go ziplining through dense and lush treetop canopies, and experience the adrenaline rush of discovering Costa Rica’s forests from new heights. You will also go whitewater tubing down a winding jungle river (weather permitting), which is always a traveler favorite. Your location near the stunning Pacific coast allows for a variety of water sports and beach time, as well as the opportunity for impromptu soccer and field games. You may even get lucky enough to see baby sea turtles hatch! And don’t forget to take in those breathtaking sunsets off the coast while spending an afternoon on the shore of one of the country’s many pristine beaches.

Lodging

Home Base is an well-maintained and comfortable family-owned hotel, located in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica, known for its beautiful beaches and protected ecological areas. You’ll have access to a pool and gardens during your ten days here. Students stay in gender-segregated dorm-style rooms with 4-8 per room. Rooms are equipped with bunk beds and have en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning.
