MARINE & MANATEE CONSERVATION

Program Overview

On this program, you will take in the wonders of Corozal Bay, home to one of the world’s largest populations of Antilles manatees. Work alongside rangers, scientists and local fishermen to protect this natural habitat through mangrove restoration, beach clean-ups and conservation initiatives with local children. Learn how waterways can be protected and conserved through governmental, organizational and community action. Revel in the natural beauty of Belize as you explore a pristine Caye and snorkel in turquoise waters. Feel the adventure in the air as you embark on activities such as ziplining and cave tubing. In just a short time, Belize will come to feel like a home away from home.

Community Service

Work alongside a nonprofit organization that is committed to protecting the Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary through marine research, monitoring, surveillance, conservation education and community development initiatives. Accompany rangers as they monitor the 178,000-acre Corozal Bay by boat. Learn how to identify migratory species and contribute to long-term conservation research. Get your hands dirty as you transplant mangrove seeds and restore coastal forests that are essential to the protection and biodiversity of the coast. Connect with locals through beach and trail clean-ups and facilitate a conservation day camp for primary school students.

Immersive Learning

In the slow-paced fishing village that we’ll call home, everyone seems to know everyone. Meet local fishermen and learn about the fish trapping methods that have been used for generations. Visit a manatee rescue center and hear from impassioned scientists and volunteers who work tirelessly to rehabilitate and release them back into the wild. Explore key archeological sites that once housed thousands of people as part of the pre-Columbian Mayan civilization. Take a tour of the Belize Zoo to see native tapir, howler monkeys and harpy eagles, and then return at night to spot nocturnal species like ocelots. Learn about social entrepreneurship from a women’s cooperative. Immerse yourself in Belize’s diverse music, dance and folklore that comes from Maya, Garifuna, Creole and Hispanic origins, among others.

Adventure

Explore Belize’s rich coastline and immense, lush landscapes. Embark on an adventure to Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve where you’ll discover mangrove trails, boat through an ancient Mayan canal, and snorkel through turquoise waters to see a pristine coral reef. Get your adrenaline pumping on a zipline adventure that will give you a birds-eye view of the rainforest. Then cool down with a river tubing trip that will take you through caves with impressive formations.

Lodging

Throughout your journey in Belize, you will stay in two distinct, captivating environments. During Days 1-9, we will stay in an exclusive hotel block nestled in a fishing town along Belize’s Northern Coast. For the final days of the trip, we’ll move to the heart of Central Belize where we’ll stay in an enclosed compound in the midst of a thriving, lush nature preserve. Students will share comfortable, gender-segregated rooms with roommates, and have access to bathrooms with Western-style toilets and showers.
