On This Program you will...
On this program you will experience life in the Somkhanda Game reserve and learn about conservation on the front lines. You might spot Africa’s “Big Five” in the region — lions, leopards, elephants, Cape buffalo and rhino. By night, you’ll live at a rustic Home Base on the reserve, hearing Zulu stories and learning about tribal culture. By day, shadow wildlife conservationists in the South African bush, go on game drives to observe animals and learn about sustainably preserving the region’s endangered species.
Your Adventure is Just Around the Corner!
Join professional conservationists in the field, assisting with habitat restoration efforts and wildlife monitoring. Help the conservation team eradicate an invasive plant species, learn about anti-poaching, undertake a snare patrol to identify leopards, and learn from passionate wildlife protectors about their experiences fighting poachers. Track the movements of wildlife by satellite, learn how rangers set camera traps, and join them in combing through video footage. Finally, uplifting the surrounding Zulu community is critical to conservation: promote successful and safe conservation programs for this region’s wildlife.
Hear from experts in the field about the challenges facing preservation of various species such as elephants and rhinos. Learn to spot fresh prints, identify wildlife tracks, discuss endangered species and more. Discover the biodiversity within the bush ecosystem. Visit a local community to learn about Zulu culture and the role the community plays in conservation. Enjoy tea with and hear stories from a ugogo (Grandmother in Zulu).
Experience all the wonders of South Africa on this programs’ overnight excursions: Go on a bush safari and sleep under the stars accompanied by professional field guides. ravel coastward to St. Lucia Wetlands Park and Cape Vidal Game Reserve for a three-day excursion. After checking into our accommodations, we’ll jump right in with a boat ride at the iSmangaliso Wetland Park estuary–try to spy some of the area’s many hippopotamus and crocodiles.
On this safari adventure, students will lodge in several locations. Upon arrival in Johannesburg, the group will stay in a guest lodge. For the remainder of the program, Home Base accommodations include wooden cabins, canvas cottages, and a safari camp, which is outside under the stars. Students will share accommodations with roommates and have access to bathrooms, and enjoy communal meals as a group.

Custom Group Travel Option
Global Leadership Adventures offers open enrollment on this program to any high school student who wishes to join any of the summer session dates listed above. Students will meet other teens from around the country and the world who sign up for the same program dates and destination.
Alternatively, this program is also available as an option for custom group travel any time of the year for those looking to put together their own group trip.
GLA Custom Group Travel works with educators, group leaders, or self-led students to create a tailored experience for their specific group of 12 or more students. Select a pre-designed itinerary or select your own countries, themes, and learning objectives. GLA’s service-learning methodology is the vehicle through which students learn, grow and challenge themselves and their fellow travelers; our host communities welcome students’ energy and helping hands.
Leadership and personal growth are the core components of all of our programs, regardless of duration, destination or theme type and can be woven throughout every aspect of the experience through our intentional design as desired by the group leader.
