South Africa: Cape Town Children's Initiative™

Highlights

One of the great meeting points of the African continent and of the world, South Africa is alive with energy, potential and action for social change.
  • Live in Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities
  • Experience the complex and multicultural society of South Africa
  • Volunteer on an education project with local youth
  • Visit the iconic Table Mountain
  • Experience South Africa’s animal kingdom
  • On the 21-day program, embark on South Africa’s famous Garden Route

On This Program you will...

Embrace and explore the colorful diversity in one of South Africa’s nine provinces, spending the majority of your time in immersive exploration of Cape Town. Learn from diverse speakers and observe how movements for social change shaped South Africa following decades of Apartheid. Be a part of the change happening to address current social issues. Delve deep into the tribal history of its people, enjoy magnificent views as you conquer the peak of Table Mountain and observe the contrast between urban and rural Cape Town.

“The symbiotic relationship between the African Leadership Academy and Global Leadership Adventures is a perfect example of how an American organization can support and catalyze the work of a cutting-edge African non-profit.  This cross-cultural collaboration and innovation for social change is exactly what we hope to instill in students on this program.”

Your Adventure is Just Around the Corner!

Community Service

Cape Town may have its modern identity as a top travel destination, but its heritage still shapes South Africa in a very physical way. Cape Town’s poorer areas are often tucked out of sight, in townships far from its gleaming coastal properties. Join a meaningful project in these township communities working with children in early childhood development centers. You’ll be assisting local teachers by working hands-on with students while also helping with ongoing physical projects at the school to help make it a more useful environment. Your impactful work will be rewarded by the bright, smiling faces of the local children who are excited to learn and play with with you every day.

Immersive Learning

Learn about Apartheid – a period of time in the country defined by racial inequality – by walking in the footsteps of their most famous leader, Nelson Mandela. Visit Robben Island, where Mandela and hundreds of others of activists for equality were imprisoned during the Apartheid regime. You will also learn about the diversity within Cape Town, including Cape Malay culture through a cooking lesson on their cuisine and a visit to the colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood. Throughout the program, learn from community leaders’ successes as you come up with dreams of your own for the change you hope to make in the world.

Adventure

Home to pristine beaches, the colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood, the cosmopolitan V&A Waterfront and majestic Table Mountain, South Africa has it all. Bike around Cape Town’s peninsula and take a challenging hike to the summit of Table Mountain—the views are well worth it! Experience the most spectacular view of Cape Point from offshore while taking a boat ride to view the rare African Penguin colonies. Stand in two places at once as you visit the most southwestern tip of Africa. Participants on the 21-day program will also partake a kayaking excursion.

Lodging

Home Base is a cozy hostel situated in a quiet neighborhood with amazing scenic views of Table Mountain in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa.
