What is the Photography Track?
The GLA Arts & Letters Fellowship for Photography is about pushing your limits in the visual media of photography.
A photograph can be a banner behind which a world can change. Photographers are constantly searching for that photo, and on your GLA program you’ll have the opportunity to try and capture yours.
Photography isn’t just about pointing and shooting. You have to really think about framing, subject, lighting, and dozens of every elements each time you click the shutter.
The Photography Track of an Arts & Letters Fellowship requires accepted participants to complete pre-program, on-program, and post-program assignments or projects. Learn more about each below!
Fellowship Components
While preparing for your trip and the video you’ll create, you’ll need to do some research into photographers that have come before and analyze one of several films or photography books for creative inspiration and learning.
Once you’re finished watching the film or book you choose, you will be asked to answer the questions in corresponding worksheets. This worksheet must be submitted before you leave for your program.
Once on your program, you will be asked to think about what type of story you want to tell with your photographs. Photographic style is created over time, and this is the perfect opportunity to try and discover yours.
During your GLA program, you can take as many photos as possible. If you’re using a digital camera, you can take many photos and edit them down later.
The best photographers tell a story with their photos. They have a message. As you progress on your fellowship, you will consider: What is your message? Why is that your message? Are you going to try and show what you want everyone to see, or push an impartial lens into every subject, allowing the viewer to make their own judgements?
This will help you as you complete your final project post-program.
IMPORTANT: You must have your own camera to bring on your program that is not a smartphone. GLA has strict cell phone policies, so you’ll need to shoot all of your footage on an external camera, such as a DSLR, a GoPro, or a point-and-shoot camera.
Once you get back home, it will be time to put all your photos together into a cohesive story. Not every photo you take is going to be amazing, and that’s ok! If you take 300 photos on your shoot, maybe about 30 of them will be high enough quality to publish, perhaps less. Part of your learning process will be sorting through and discovering gems from your time at your program, through your new lens as a photographer-in-training.
You final project will be outlined in greater detail in your Fellowship Curriculum, which you will receive upon acceptance as an Arts & Letters Fellow in the Photography Track.
Completion of your final photography project will be the capstone to your fellowship and an incredible highlight you can feature on upcoming college applications and beyond.
