Overview

Named after female warriors of Greek mythology, the Amazon is indeed a place of mythical status. What traveler hasn't imagined a trip to admire this incredible rainforest, teeming with wildlife? Surprisingly, it’s actually the little things that make it special: Being surrounded by rainforest foliage, cooking food over a bonfire, waking to the sounds of howler monkeys. You’ll also experience spectacular Rio de Janeiro as well, exploring its world famous beachfront and seeing its landmark Christ the Redeemer statue up close.

Community Service

The jaguar once roamed millions of square kilometers from Argentina to Arizona. However, decades of deforestation and hunting have drastically shrunk its habitat and eliminated over half of the historic jaguar population. Today, the species is listed as “threatened to near extinction.” Learn why conservation is critical: Jaguars play an important role in keeping the food chain balanced, and the Amazon’s natural, wild environment in equilibrium. With naturalists and biologists, study jaguar behavior through modern tracking methods, and discuss the human-wildlife relationship. You'll also have the chance to contribute to a service project in Rio's favelas, working on community development that benefits local youth.

Hands-On Learning

On this program, you'll spend time in the both the Amazon and in Rio. This split gives you a unique chance to compare and contrast life in the Brazilian rainforest and in the city. What two issues threaten both wild and human populations alike? Deforestation and over-development. In the Amazon, observe many examples, like the Balbina Dam on the Uatumã River. You'll also learn how native jaguar populations have been threatened, and what locals are doing to protect them. In Rio, discover what it's like to live in Brazil's most famous city. Explore its world-class beaches, unique take on Brazilian culture and more.

Adventure

Living in the Amazon is a daily adventure, with Home Base perched in the rainforest and constant opportunity to see flora and fauna right outside your window. Go on a tropical tree climbing adventure that brings you to the Amazon's highest branches! You'll be assisted by an experienced guide who knows this canopy top to bottom. Spend a night in a hammock in the rainforest, go canoeing and take a cooking class. Cap off your experience by exploring Rio de Janeiro and its icons: the famed Christ the Redeemer statue, Copacabana and Ipanema Beach, Sugarloaf Mountain and bossa nova beats.

Lodging

Home Base in the Amazon is an eco-lodge situated deep within a private conservation area. The lodge is owned and operated by a family for whom preserving wild places is a way of life! Home Base is constructed from traditional materials and inspired by traditional Amazon design. For the Rio de Janeiro portion of the program, the home base will be a hostel in Copacabana that is exclusively reserved for GLA students and staff. Accommodations are simple, but clean, safe and incredibly scenic. Students will live with roommates and have access to shared bathrooms.
