Overview

Named after female warriors of Greek mythology, the Amazon is indeed a place of mythical status. What traveler hasn't imagined a trip to admire this incredible rainforest, teeming with wildlife? Surprisingly, on a vast natural feature whose size is legendary, it’s actually the little things that make it special: Being surrounded by rainforest foliage, cooking food over a bonfire, waking to the sounds of howler monkeys. You’ll learn about Brazil’s issues with deforestation and how they challenge life on the Amazon for both people and wildlife. On the 21-day Flagship Program, experience spectacular Rio de Janeiro as well, nicknamed Cidade Marvilhosa by its citizens—”the marvelous city.”

The jaguar once roamed millions of square kilometers from Argentina to Arizona. However, decades of deforestation and hunting have drastically shrunk its habitat and eliminated over half of the historic jaguar population. Today, the species is listed as “threatened to near extinction.” Learn why conservation is critical: Jaguars play an important role in keeping the food chain balanced, and the Amazon’s natural, wild environment in equilibrium. With naturalists and biologists, study jaguar behavior through modern tracking methods, and discuss the human-wildlife relationship. By protecting these wild cats and their homes, we also stand up for preserving the mysterious beauty of the Amazon.

Hands-On Learning

What two issues threaten both jaguar and human populations alike? Deforestation and over-development of the Amazon rainforest. Observe many examples, like the Balbina Dam on the Uatumã River. This was a heavily controversial project due to the destruction of forest lands and displacement of tribal homes. Have you observed similar projects back home? What were the arguments for and against the development? Can you think of a sustainable way forward that would have appeased both sides?

Adventure

Living on the Amazon is a daily adventure, with Home Base perched in the rainforest and constant opportunity to see flora and fauna right outside your window. Go on a tropical tree climbing adventure that brings you to the Amazon's highest branches! You'll be assisted by an experienced guide who knows this canopy top to bottom. Spend a night in a hammock in the rainforest, go canoeing and take a cooking class. On the Flagship Program, experience Rio de Janeiro and its icons: the famed Christ the Redeemer statue, Copacabana and Ipanema Beach, Sugarloaf Mountain and rapid-fire samba beats.

Lodging

Home Base in the Amazon is an eco-lodge situated deep within a private conservation area. The lodge is owned and operated by a family for whom preserving wild places is a way of life! Home Base is constructed from traditional materials and inspired by traditional Amazon design. For students traveling to Rio de Janeiro on the 21-Day program, the second home base will be a lodge in Copa Cabana that is exclusively reserved for GLA students and staff. Accommodations are simple, but clean, safe and incredibly scenic. Students will live with roommates and have access to shared bathrooms.
