Cuba offers a glimpse into another era, as if everything here was put on pause several decades ago. Sixty years of isolation has resulted in a preserved culture where the streets on the island feel like they've just begun to come alive again, even as you glimpse iconic antique cars driving past you. In Havana, volunteer on infrastructure projects with a community of artists and learn about the country's complex history. Tour this urban center of Cuba while encountering diverse locals and youth along the way. Then, experience a taste of Caribbean life outside the city, where the colors of Cuban life make for an unforgettable program.

Please note: GLA's Cuba program has been cancelled for summer 2019.

Community Service

You can make a difference in the lives of the Cuban people. Enduring economic hardship and a general lack of resources, the people of Havana's barrios began to suffer when urban decay took hold in the 'Special Period," a euphemism for the extended period of economic crisis in the 1990s. In the midst of the community's struggles, a public art center called Muraleando was formed. Today, Muraleando is a hub for creativity as well as a gathering center that provides resources for local adults and children. You'll be volunteering on these community-led initiatives by helping with a diverse array of projects. One day you could be participating in infrastructure projects benefiting the community, while on another day you might be supporting local art projects.

Hands-On Learning

Your journey will peel back layers of Cuba’s culture and history to reveal a diverse heritage, evolving international relations, ongoing social projects, efforts to enhance sustainability and a modern healthcare system. Go on a “conservation tour” of Havana, where you'll visit sites that seek to preserve culturally significant architecture while sponsoring social art projects for Cuban citizens. You'll get context on what you observe by hearing from local experts about Cuba's history and unique social development structure. Cuba's long isolation means your cultural experience here will be unique among all the Caribbean islands.

In addition to discovering the history and modern rhythms of life in Havana, visit Cuba's breathtaking beaches and forest-covered mountains. Go on an excursion to Cuba's countryside, where you'll get to experience different rural and urban environments as Cubans greet you throughout your journey across the island. You'll also have the opportunity to participate in a combination of outdoor activities that highlight Cuba's natural beauty, including its magical coastline and pristine beaches.

You'll experience the authentic Cuban culture in a real family home. Students will stay in "Casas Particulares", or rented homes. They will share rooms with roommates, and have shared bathrooms with hot-water showers.
