GLA Fellowships

Apply to become a GLA Honors Fellow or Arts & Letters Fellow.

Become a Fellow. Be the Change.

Global Leadership Adventures is launching Fellowships as a way to offer academically or creatively gifted students the opportunity to expand upon their GLA program with a curriculum that both highlights and recognizes their achievements. These self-guided and GLA-supported Fellowships invite students to step up and learn to be leaders in their field of interest.

GLA invites any enrolled student to apply to become a Global Leadership Adventures Honors Fellow or Arts & Letters Fellow.

The best part? Our Fellowships are specially designed to work with any GLA summer program, of any length, in any location, because you are the leader in your learning as a GLA Fellow.

» While any GLA summer program is eligible for Fellowship participation, students cannot participate as Fellows for our spring break programs at this time.

Being a Fellow won't interfere with any part of your regular GLA program experience either, nor will it exclude you from any activities or excursions on your program - you can do it all! So feel free to submit a Fellowship Application no matter which program you're attending this summer and know it will only add to your experience.

» Think of a Fellowship as an extension of your GLA program experience and learning, with the heavy lifting happening mostly before and after your program abroad. If you're the kind of student who wants to go that extra mile, is self-motivated to take on additional learning assignments before your program, champion skill-building or critical thinking on-program, and complete a creative final project or essay after your program, we encourage you to apply.

» It's also totally ok if you choose to only go on the GLA program and travel abroad without being a Fellow! That's why we've made the Fellowship optional... this is an add-on experience, and while you may gain something from joining, you're not losing out on any part of your GLA program experience by not participating.

The Fellowship Fee is $250, and can be paid after you are accepted as a GLA Fellow. The $250 cost covers your curriculum and review of your final project by the Fellowship Committee. Applying is free. Click here to learn more about Applications, Forms and Payments.

For those students who participate in one of the Fellowships, please note your Final Fellowship Project will be due by September 30th.

What Does a Fellowship Look Like?

Each GLA Fellowship contains three curriculum units:

  • Pre-Program: You will be asked to complete coursework to spur your learning on a selected topic. This may include reading, viewing documentaries, and more, and you will be given options to shape your experience.
  • On-Program: Once you arrive in-country, you will have an objective to complete that will further your learning and prepare you for your post-program assignment. This may include taking photos, journaling or capturing video depending on your chosen fellowship.
  • Post-Program: After you return home, you will be given time to wrap up your fellowship by completing a special project. This may include writing an essay, curating a photo collection, or producing a short video.

Every step of your Fellowship is outlined on the curriculum you receive, from start to finish. While the Fellowship curriculum is self-guided and relies on you leading your learning, if you follow this guiding document step-by-step, you can't go wrong or miss anything.

Your time committment during any segment of the Fellowship is flexible. Like any strong leadership immersion program, what you put into it will determine what you get out of it. There is no minimum number of hours you must invest to be a successful Fellow. Quality counts more than quantity!

Once your application is reviewed and you are accepted into your desired Fellowship, you will be emailed payment details, along with a packet containing your pre-program, on-program, and post-program curriculum with very clear directions on everything you need to know, from start to finish (see the section titled 'Applications & Payments' at the bottom of this page for more details).

You will also be emailed a media release to sign, which will allow GLA to share your final fellowship projects and give your work some time in the spotlight.

Upon completion of your Fellowship, and successful submission of your final project, you will be honored with the following awards:

  • A Certificate of Achievement
  • A Medal or Plaque Honoring Your Achievement
  • A Recommendation Letter from our Executive Director
  • Add 'GLA Fellow' to Your College Application

One Fellow with the highest rated final project, as determined by our Fellowship Committee, will also be named GLA Fellow of the Year and awarded a $500 college scholarship!
