Program Highlights

Explore Rincón De La Vieja in Costa Rica

Volunteer with an experimental forestry project in the lowland dry forest

In the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica, you’ll discover volcanoes and hot springs, rainforests teeming with tropical wildlife, and authentic and genuine communities in need.

Experience An Active Volcano!

Not many teenagers can say that they’ve hiked an active volcano—but students who travel on GLA’s Costa Rica: Empowering Rainforest Communities program have the chance to do just that! Rincón De La Vieja is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the hike to it’s summit is a two-part adventure! Throughout the first, you’ll wind through dense cloud forest. Then, you’ll begin a gradual climb up the side of the volcano over volcanic rock, finally reaching the summit and staring down into the crater! It’s an unreal experience for teenagers who want to bust out of their comfort zone and experience something different- and it’s located in one of the most beautiful and untouched places on earth!

The Heart of the Matter

You’ll make the most out of your time spent in Costa Rica, filling your days with exciting adventures and lush landscapes. Most important, you’ll have the chance to spend time with local people, giving back to their community through important and authentic service work. You’ll volunteer with an experimental forestry project in the lowland dry forest, helping to build tree nurseries and plant trees to reforest the area. You’ll also have the opportunity to help an impoverished community by volunteering on eco projects for schools in the local community, helping the students to carry our environmental sustainability projects in the area. Between service work, cultural exercises and adventures in the rainforest, your time in Costa Rica will live in your heart for a lifetime!
