"This trip to Peru was the most amazing experience of my life. Peru... What a different world down there. The Amazon Rainforest is the most incredible place I have ever been to. I saw so many amazing things including sloths, monkeys, frogs, snakes, and a lot of weird bugs.

As a group we did a lot of community service in the Amazon. We worked with the Santa Cruz school community and I assumed a leadership role managing a team to present a lesson to the kids. We also bagged and nurtured growing trees that will eventually be planted in deforested areas of the Santa Cruz Forest Reserve.

On the trip, I learned a lot about myself and what I want to do with my life. Traveling to the Amazon was an amazing experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

“My Peruvian adventure was beyond words. This was my first time traveling abroad alone and it was my first time in South America. The person who I was when I was boarding the plane to Peru was not going to be the same person who 3 weeks later would be leaving it.

Our service project was to dig the foundations for a fish farm in the rural community just outside of Cuzco. The work was hard and physically demanding but our mighty group of 19 banded together and helped as well as encouraged each other constantly. The staff was friendly, funny, and all around amazing people who were passionate about helping us have the most immersive and educational experiences possible.

My favorite part of the trip was the trek into the Andes mountains at the end. I have never hiked in such a beautiful and remote environment and I was so happy to be doing it with my Peruvian family.”

"This trip was definitely one of the best experiences of my life. I felt completely safe and supported the entire time—the GLA staff met us at the airport and guided us on how to act in the community. We stayed in a small town which allowed us to connect with local people and experience daily life, but we also traveled to different cities to experience museums, ruins, white water rafting, and Machu Picchu.

Through leadership activities and Spanish classes I was able to greatly improve my Spanish skills while making many new friends that I still keep in contact with. At first, I was nervous to go on this trip alone, but I ended up learning so much about myself and becoming more confident and independent. This is an incredible program that combines volunteerism and adventure perfectly, allowing teens to really make a difference. I plan to go on another GLA trip next summer!”
