Business with Heart

Certified B Corporations like GLA measure success not just by the bottom line, but through meaningful contributions to the world and local community

What is a B Corp?

Great question! The title doesn't give much of a clue behind what a B Corp really is, so we're happy to fill you in on all the details.

Certified B Corporations are actually just a new type of organization that apply the strengths of business to solve systemic social and environmental issues. B Corps, unlike traditional corporations:

  • Meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards
  • Meet higher legal accountability standards
  • Build business constituency for public policies that support sustainable business

Global Leadership Adventures is part of Terra Education, a certified B Corporation, and we acquired B Corp status because everything we stand for in our summer programs - from environmental conservation to social impact - are facets we believe our organization should also reflect.

Why Become a B Corp?

We became a B Corp in order to join a movement of other companies who hold values similar to ours and to raise awareness among the general public that there are businesses who are truly committed to solving the world’s problems through their operations.

Our mission at GLA is to empower students to realize their potential to transform the world and their role in it. We believe that all people, especially young people, have the potential to be leaders and affect positive change.

Young people in particular tend to model to the behavior and ethics of those they surround themselves with, so in order for our community service projects in countries around the world to succeed at the hands of our students, we at GLA also need to sustain ethical leadership and a committment to grow our own community and environmental impacts.

What Difference Does It Make?

It makes all the difference in the world!

When we say we're a business with heart, we mean that we're an organization that recognizes how critical it is to measure our success in ways beyond the bottom line. Every year, we look at both our immediate and long-term impacts in communities around the world in which we operate, in order to ensure our programs are contributing to these places and the people who live there in a meaningful way.

Instead of coming into communities and deciding on a problem we think is worth fixing, we partner with local community organizations in these communities to solve the problems members of the community see as most pressing, because we care about making a difference that matters to them, not what we decided matters to them.

And we keep in close touch with alumni students and their families for years to come, in order to help our participants find their footing as they take those first steps post-program in making their world a better place.

At GLA, our B Corp status reflects values we hold close to our heart, and we hope you share that same optimistic vision for the world as you begin preparing for your journey overseas this year.
