Overview
What is the real China? It is a difficult question to answer because China is in a constant state of change. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about China and experience the urban and rural sides of life in a country that is rich in culture and history.
During this teen study abroad trip to China, you will explore Beijing, the political and cultural capital of China. From its neon lights and massive skyscrapers to the centuries old castles and gates that still stand in the city, it is clear why Beijing is considered one of the world's greatest cities. You will also visit the rural countryside in the historic Mentougou District, nestled in a mountains region located two hours outside Beijing. The area is known for its production of agricultural products such as roses, wild jujubes, mushrooms, and Beijing white pears.
Throughout the program you'll have a chance to discuss globalization, urbanization, and human rights as well as learn about traditional and modern culture.
Community Service
During your stay in Beijing, you will teach conversational English to Chinese students and observe how urban youth have embraced globalization and education. In the rural Mentougou District, you will work in the fields plowing and harvesting crops while continuing to teach English to rural students. Here you will learn how the rural population is maintaining their traditional way of life.
You will receive a certificate for 30 hours of community service during the program.
Learning
The community service program has been designed to provide a theoretical overview of what is happening in China today through various sessions on culture, economy, and traditional art. You'll also receive a crash course (two 2-hour sessions) in Mandarin Chinese. We'll explore temples, markets, pagodas, and places of social and cultural significance everyday.
Excursions
During the study abroad trip to China, students have the opportunity to learn about China's long and rich history. You will also experience all that Beijing has to offer. We will venture to the Great Wall, built between the 5th century and the 16th century and is the only man-made structure visible from space. We will visit Tiananmen Square, the largest city square in the world and site of the 1989 hunger strikes and protest which left nearly 7,000 people dead. We will also visit the 798 Arts District, home to some of China's most avant-garde artists. The excursions will continue on to the Olympic greens, The Forbidden City, The Hidden Temple, the Summer Palace, and various other temples and palaces of cultural significance.
Lodging
During the first week in Beijing, you will stay on the campus of Beijing Language and Culture University located in the Haidian District. You'll live in a dorm room with 2 to 3 other students and includes a private bathroom and shower. In the rural area, we will be staying at local guest houses.
