The GLA Experience: For Counselors

Global Leadership Adventures is frequently cited by students and college admissions officers as a powerful way to increase a student's base of experience from which they can draw upon when writing college application essays.

GLA alumni have returned from their experience to attend universities such as:

  • Oxford
  • Cambridge
  • Yale
  • Williams
  • Harvard
  • Princeton
  • Stanford
  • Bryn Mawr

These students speak highly of how their GLA Experience inspired them to learn more about other countries, and prepared them for discussions and debates on global issues.

Students work with talented professional teachers who challenge students to reflect on global themes. Often, students return with a newly cultivated intellectual maturity and curiosity that is reflected in their college application essays and interviews.

As William Kirby, Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard, said "If you're going to come to Harvard College, it would be very good to have a passport." GLA does more than get students to travel, it encourages students to challenge the way they look at the world.

In three weeks, students will:

  • Further develop leadership skills and meet inspiring local leaders
  • Make a difference in people's lives volunteering in community service projects
  • Study a foreign language
  • Develop friendships with students from top prep schools from around the world
  • Gain experience that will make them stand out to college admissions counselors

Annabel Smith, teacher at the Taft School, says, "GLA is an amazing opportunity for students to get real world experience that most students do not have until their junior year of university. Students often return with a global perspective that makes them stand out from many of their peers."
