Excursions

At GLA in Cape Town, you’ll embark on exciting excursions and momentous cultural explorations throughout key landmarks, historical sites and innovative organizations around the Western Cape. Excursions are integral to The GLA Experience - they enable you to soak in the natural beauty of this region and learn about how local citizens of different races are learning to live together in post-Apartheid, South Africa.

Each year specific excursions vary, however, any of the following and numerous other options may be included in the coming year's programming:

Outdoor Adventures
  • Riding bikes through a nature reserve to the Cape of Good Hope, the southwestern most point of the African continent.
  • Hiking up Table Mountain, South Africa’s most famous natural landmark, which provides breathtaking views over the city and its beaches
  • Seeing African penguin colonies at their beachside reserve in Boulder’s Beach
Cultural Immersion
  • Hearing from former political prisoners share their stories as you tour Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela (first democratically elected President of South Africa) was imprisoned for 18 years
  • Exploring the District Six Museum, which preserves the memory of one of Cape Town’s most vibrant multicultural neighborhoods - a place where colored residents were evicted and reclaimed a white neighborhood during the Apartheid era
Leadership In-Action
  • Visiting the workshop of a sustainable small tea-bag company that trains and provide township locals work and hearing about how this business is changing lives
  • Visiting the founder of a local dance company that is training township youth, many of whom now tour internationally and earn enough to support their families
