Learning

In order to fully experience Brazil, it's important to learn about and appreciate the local culture. By participating in thought-provoking seminar discussions, led by knowledgeable instructors, and hearing from dynamic local leaders, students gain a more holistic experience of the country.

All students will receive Portuguese language instruction with an emphasis on acquiring a basic knowledge of conversational phrases and idioms.

Some examples of seminars include:

  • Brazilian culture, including local dances, such as samba and forro
  • Globalization’s effect on contemporary Brazilian culture
  • Learning about the history of capoeira and its cultural significance today, as well as a hands-on workshop where you will learn some basic moves
  • Discussions with social leaders who work with youth living on the street and who train young adolescents to become peer educators
  • Meeting leaders of a groundbreaking micro-credit institution, Bancos Palmas, which was set-up to fight poverty and improve the living conditions of residents through local economic development
